Seussical

Seussical
Family
23 – 27 October 2018
7.30pm every eve plus 2.30pm Sat matinee

“Oh, the thinks you can think!” when Dr. Seuss’ best-loved characters collide and cavort in an unforgettable musical caper! Now one of the most performed shows in America, Seussical is a fantastical, magical, musical extravaganza!

The Cat in the Hat tells the story of Horton, an elephant who discovers a speck of dust that contains the Whos, including Jojo, a Who child sent off to military school for thinking too many “thinks”, Horton faces a double challenge: not only must he protect the Whos from a world of naysayers and dangers, but he must guard an abandoned egg, left in his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird. Although Horton faces ridicule, danger, kidnapping and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him. Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community are challenged and emerge triumphant.

Seussical is fun for the whole family! With songs like ‘Oh the Thinks You Can Think’, ‘Solla Sollew’, ‘Alone in the Universe’, ‘Amazing Mayzie’ and ‘How Lucky You Are’, you’ll be tapping along whether you’re 8 or 108!

Nottingham philharmonic orchestra- bohemian melodies concert

Nottingham Philharmonic Orchestra –  Bohemian Melodies
Concert
18 November 2018 3.00pm

Conductor: Mark Heron

Dvorak – String Serenade

Dvorak – Wind Serenade

Mozart – Symphony No 38 (Prague)

The two serenades by Dvorak make a fine contrast, though both are rooted in Bohemian folk music, while Mozart’s symphony was written for his beloved Praguers, who always appreciated his music so much more than the Viennese public.

calamity jane

Calamity Jane
Musical
Tue 19 – Sat 23 Feb 2019
7.30pm every eve plus 2.00pm Sat matinee

West Bridgford Operatic Society presents Calamity Jane, the stage musical adaptation of the 1953 film of the same name starring Doris Day. It is a fictional retelling of the life of Calamity Jane, a frontierswoman of the American Wild West.

The farcical plot revolves around the heroine and peace-keeper turned gambler, Wild Bill Hickock, in the small South Dakota town of Deadwood. A riot breaks out at The Golden Garter saloon when a beautiful actress named Frances Fryer, is revealed to be a man. Henry Miller, the saloon’s proprietor, fails to cover-up the mistake and Calamity appeases the disappointed customers by promising to fetch the heart-throb, Adelaide Adams from Chicago. Unfortunately, through another twist of mistaken identity, Calamity mistakes Adelaide’s maid, Katie Brown as the star and brings her back to Deadwood. Katie’s first attempt is tentative and she is exposed as a fraud by the disappointed audience. Calamity jumps to rescue her and Katie’s reprise wins the heart of every man in town, including Calamity’s handsome love hope, Lt. Danny Gilmartin. Calamity reluctantly overcomes her jealousy over losing Danny and discovers her true love for Wild Bill.

Featuring ‘Secret Love’, the Academy Award winning and chart-topping hit, and punchy numbers like ‘The Deadwood Stage (Whip Crack Away)’ and ‘Just Blew in from the Windy City’, Calamity Jane is a Musical Western that you won’t want to miss.
